Important note on how your mental health information is used when you choose to use insurance for therapy:
While we may be in-network with your insurance plan, you may still prefer to pay out-of-pocket.
Using insurance means that your mental health treatment records are shared with the insurance company. This can raise concerns about privacy and confidentiality, as insurance companies keep detailed records of your diagnosis and treatment. Every insurance claim submitted must have a diagnosis that indicates a necessity for treatment. Insurance claims require detailed information about your diagnosis, treatment, and progress. This information is shared with the insurance company and becomes part of your medical record.
Other concerns:
Various parties, including insurance adjusters, claims processors, and potentially third-party contractors, may have access to your mental health information, increasing the risk of unauthorized access.
Insurance companies, like any other organization, are vulnerable to data breaches. A breach could expose sensitive information about your mental health treatment to unauthorized individuals.
If you receive insurance through your employer, there is a possibility (albeit limited by regulations like HIPAA) that your employer could become aware of your mental health treatment, potentially affecting your privacy at work.
Detailed records of mental health treatment can affect your future insurance options. Insurance companies may use this information to adjust premiums or coverage options.
While psychotherapy notes (the therapist's personal notes on sessions) are generally given special protection under laws like HIPAA and are not typically shared with insurance companies, other detailed treatment records are shared. The nuances and context captured in these notes might still be indirectly inferred from the required documentation.
